Saving search results and managing references (7/10)

Most databases and library catalogues have a memory list function. You can collect interesting results in a list and analyse them later. Some databases also allow users to save and combine individual search inquiries. These lists can also be exported and sent via email.

When it comes to literature you have chosen to work with, it is helpful to use reference management programmes. They do not only assist in collecting and organising your sources, but they can also automatically generate lists of bibliographical references in seconds. The Göttingen State and University Library offers interactive courses as well as self-study materials on the following reference management programmes:

  • Citavi is a very versatile tool for Windows which assists in citing, compiling bibliographies, and task management. The University of Göttingen has licenced Citavi for students and members of the university, which means you can install and use the programme for free.
  • Zotero is a web-based, open source tool that (unlike Citavi) is also compatible with Mac and Linux. It is a perfect tool for group work.
  • Endnote is mainly used by the students at the Medical Centre of the University of Göttingen – please refer directly to the Medical Library.
