Tree Species Composition

READ THE INSTRUCTION
Species composition describes what species are present in a stand and their abundance and distribution.
Species composition can be expressed as:
  • the percentage of the number of stems,
  • percentage of the basal area,
  • percentage of growing stock
per species or per species group.
EXAMPLE 1: Species Composition in Goettingen Forest, Germany
"More than half (51.9%) of the sample observed in Goettingen forest is Fagus sylvatica, approximately 13.4% is Acer platanoides, 10% is Fraxinus excelsior, 7.4% is Acer pseudoplatanus, and the rest is composed of other species in smaller quantities."

EXAMPLE 2: Species Composition in a mixed forest stand, New Brunswick, Canada
"Beech (Fagus grandifolia) makes up 43% of the species, in terms of number of stems, but only 22% of the basal area and 16% of the volume. Red spruce (Picea rubrum), on the other hand, makes up only 2% of the species, in terms of number of stems, but 12% of the basal area and 14% of the volume."
